Did you listen to 'JUST ONE THING', a fantastic podcast series by Michael Mosley, in which he talked about Nordic Walking?
In the episode he dives into the science of Nordic Walking and talks to Dr Jennifer Reed about her research that demonstrates why Nordic Walking is one of the best forms of exercise for improving your heart health.
Here's 5 things we learnt:
- Nordic Walking burns more fat without going further or faster
- You use twice as many muscles as walking and burn more calories
- In just 4 weeks of Nordic Walking people with Chronic back pain saw a significant reduction in pain plus improved strength and flexibility. Importantly they also felt emotionally better with a 23% improvement in mental health!
- Nordic Walking improves your core muscles and upper body muscles for a whole body workout
- Nordic Walking is more effective than Hiit Training or jogging in improving functional fitness. It showed a 77 metre improvement on the 6 minute walk test compared to Hiit training which only improved performance of the test by 51 metres.
