Your Nordic walking poles work hard. Whether you’re walking a few miles each week or leading groups and clocking up hundreds of miles every year, your poles are constantly exposed to wear and tear from roads, trails, mud, rain and regular use.
The good news is that quality Nordic walking poles can last for many years. However, like any piece of equipment, they perform best when properly maintained and occasionally refurbished. A quick inspection every few months can help keep your poles working efficiently, safely and comfortably.
The strap is arguably the most important part of a Nordic walking pole. It’s what allows you to transfer force through the pole during the push phase and achieve the full-body benefits of Nordic walking.
Over time, straps can become:
· Stretched or “baggy”
· Compressed from repeated use
· Misshapen through washing or drying
· Worn around the edges
A properly fitting strap should hold your hand securely while still feeling comfortable. If your hand is moving around inside the strap or you find yourself gripping the handle harder to compensate, it’s probably time for a replacement.
· Excessive movement inside the strap
· Visible wear or fraying
· Difficulty achieving a snug fit
· Reduced power transfer when pushing through the pole
New straps can often make an older pair of poles feel almost new again.
Velcro fastening systems naturally wear over time.
Dirt, fibres, mud and repeated opening and closing can reduce the grip, making straps less secure and harder to adjust.
Check whether:
· The Velcro stays firmly closed during walking
· The hooks are clogged with fluff or debris
· The fastening feels weaker than when new
Sometimes a thorough clean can restore performance, but if the Velcro no longer holds securely, replacement straps are usually the best solution.
TOP TIP! Always store Velcro straps closed, this stops excess wear and picking up fluff!
Your rubber pads take the brunt of the impact on tarmac and hard surfaces.
A simple question to ask is:
“Is there any tyre tread left?”
Most Nordic walking pads have a distinctive tread pattern when new. As the pads wear down, grip and shock absorption are reduced.
Look for:
· Flattened surfaces
· Uneven wear
· Cracks in the rubber
· Loss of tread pattern
Worn pads can affect grip, increase vibration and make your poles noisier on hard surfaces.
The good news? Replacement pads are one of the easiest and most cost-effective upgrades you can make.
The metal spike underneath the rubber pad is usually made from tungsten carbide, an extremely hard and durable material.
Unlike rubber pads, these spikes rarely wear out under normal Nordic walking use.
However, they should still be inspected for:
· Damage caused by striking rocks or hard surfaces
· Looseness within the pole tip
· Excessive dirt build-up around the spike housing
If you’ve been walking in mud, sand or coastal environments, give the spikes a good clean and check everything remains secure.
Many walkers are surprised by how much better their poles look and feel after a thorough clean.
Pay particular attention to:
· Strap fabrics
· Handles
· Locking mechanisms
· Ferrules and tip assemblies
Mud, salt, dust and grit can gradually affect performance, especially on adjustable poles.
A damp cloth, mild detergent and a little patience can often restore poles to near-new condition.
The shaft is the backbone of your pole and deserves careful inspection.
Look closely for:
· Hairline cracks
· Deep scratches or gouges
· Areas that appear crushed or dented
· Signs of impact damage
This is particularly important with lightweight carbon poles. While carbon fibre is incredibly strong, any significant damage should be taken seriously.
If you notice cracks or structural damage, stop using the pole and seek advice before continuing.
Adjustable poles contain additional moving parts that need occasional inspection.
Check that:
· Sections slide smoothly
· Locking systems tighten securely
· The pole does not collapse under pressure
· There is no excessive play between sections
If the pole slips while walking, the locking mechanism may need cleaning, adjustment or replacement.
A well-maintained adjustable pole should remain solid and secure throughout your walk.
In many cases, replacing straps and pads can dramatically extend the life of a quality pair of poles.
Consider refurbishing if:
· The shaft is in good condition
· The pole feels structurally sound
· Only the wearable components are showing age
A refurbishment is often significantly cheaper than buying a new pair of poles and can restore much of the original performance.
Your Nordic walking poles are a key part of your technique, comfort and enjoyment. A few minutes spent checking straps, pads, spikes and shafts can make a huge difference to how they perform.
If your straps have gone baggy, the Velcro is losing its grip, the pads are smooth as racing slicks or the locking mechanisms aren’t holding as they should, it may be time for a refurbishment.
And if you’re not sure what your poles need, get in touch with the team at Nordic Walk Store. We’ll be happy to help you identify replacement parts, refurbishment options and solutions to keep your poles performing at their best for many more miles to come.
